STARS COME OUT in MIDTOWN FOR GOOD CAUSE (11/11/14)

Every year Atlanta Brave Craig Kimbrel gets a crowd together to have a big fundraising party to benefit Curing Kids Cancer. It’s a cause that is close to his heart.

“I like helping the kids get back into the field so they can play,” said Kimbrel. “We’re here to do whatever it takes.”

Atlanta’s Fox Theater Egyptian Ballroom was the setting. Ricky Skaggs was waiting to go on stage. A sumptuous spread of food was presented by Proof of The Pudding, and was being distributed into bellies across the room. Occasionally, you could hear the sound of a champagne bottle pop.

On the west side, Silent Auction tables offered every item imaginable. There were famous autographs, and even a football helmet or two. A crowd of people were busy bidding.

“We’re so lucky to have friends like Craig,” said Grainne Owen, Founder and Executive Director of Curing Kids Cancer. Years ago, Owen and her husband were personally effected with the cancer death of their child. “This event brings together a lot of love, support and awareness that is really needed toward children with rare and often fatal cancers.”

Supporters in the room carry big corporate names, including AT&T and Merrill Lynch. Michael Varzi, of Merrill’s Varzi Team, invited many people to the event. “It’s such a great cause, there’s nothing more real than having your child being sick. In this group we aim to find some cures.”

The entertainment lineup included Nashville’s Haley & Michaels duet, Meghan Lindsey of the Steel Magnolias, and Ricky Skaggs and the Kentucky Thunder.

In attendance was Dr. Eric S. Schafer, of the Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Schafer is one of the doctors leading research studies which hope to cure rare childhood cancers. “I’m so proud to be in Atlanta for this event,” said Schafer “…the only way we can continue with our research is to do the research, and do it quickly. We need the support of organizations like Atlanta’s Curing Kids Cancer.”

“I’m glad that we can be a small part of this,” said Supporter Afrous Varzi “…it’s a great event, first class, and the people here really are making a difference.”

As the Kentucky Thunder played Bluegrass, Kimbrel and his wife danced. It was a good night for dancing, a great night for hope.
